The 1608 name comes from the origin of Canadian dairy cows and Charlevoix's heritage of milk production. A few hundred cows, imported from France from 1608 to 1670, gave birth to the entire Canadian breed. According to historical records, there were 500,000 cows in 1900; there are less than 500 left today.
